ABOUT ME - HOW YOGA HELPS MY PHOTOGRAPHY

I have been practicing Yoga as long as I can remember.. And by that, it’s been such a transformative practice that I can definitely categorise my life into pre-yoga days and once I found this beautiful science and art form in movement.

I was never big into sports, I think due to my non-competitive nature. I enjoy getting into the felt-sense of all experiences I’m in, and there’s a magic to being on the yoga mat and moving where each practice feels different, and has it’s own unique flavour. This is not unlike weddings, where all weddings may all follow a similar ‘breakdown of events’ but each wedding - with the weather, the location and the unique personalities of couples and guests that ensures I am asked to experience the day with fresh eyes.

I walked into my first yoga studio at Egg of the Universe back in my early 20s, and found it to be both a discipline of awareness and restorative to my energetic state. I would walk into the studio a lil fatigued and leave a new refreshed person. It enhanced every aspect of my life.

Shooting weddings can be a lot on the body. Carrying almost 20 kgs of gear around, chasing the sun, and with bigger weddings speaking a lot louder than I’m used to. I am a visual perfectionist and that means I want to be in the right place at the right time, always.

Yoga keeps me agile to move around freely, but most of all it keeps me present. The practice helps me zoom into subtle moments that ask to be seen and documented. Little gestures of love that ask not to go unnoticed. Little flickers and changes in light that can enhance the power of an image.

Along with my digital cameras, film cameras, super 8 and polaroid cameras - Yoga, meditation, and breathing techniques are part of the arsenal of tools I have as a wedding and portrait photographer.

In fact, the combination of love for both photography and yoga is how the name Breathing Light came to me. Photography in Latin literally means to ‘write with light’ and Yoga’s power lies in the freedom that presence and breath creates.

So that’s a little bit of how one of my other (many) passions helps me with my work as a photographer, let me know if this resonates to you!
